---
I'd like to make sure everyone understands that I fully support the
ROOTS-BBS concept. I was only trying to make the point that there are
higher probability resources readily available. As the system grows
it will become more interesting. I don't want to discourage anyone.
Nor should anyone be discouraged if they dial up the ROOTS-BBS and
find absolutely nothing on their ancestors. In fact, they should dial
up the BBS with the expectation of finding nothing. A shot in the dark
seldom finds its mark. But I'd be lying to you if I said I had never
taken a shot in the dark.

bennison@clt.DEC (Victor Bennison - DTN 381-2156) (12/26/85)

----
I *NEVER NEVER NEVER* said I do genealogy for a fee. I do a lot of genealogy
for other people, if they are working on something in which I have an
interest, but I do NOT charge. I run a newsletter, and I do charge
a subscription rate, but it doesn't even cover my costs, not to mention
the hours and hours of my time I put into it. And I only charge 1/3 rate
to anyone who claims they are on a fixed income and can't afford the higher
rate, and would send it to them free if they still couldn't afford that.

This whole thing has gotten way out of hand. I support you for spending
your time in the interests of genealogical research. I, personally, don't
think your service is very useful. For what it could possibly provide ME
given the amount of money I would have to pour into it, I could get a lot
more information for the same money elsewhere. Other people may disagree
with me and that's fine. There is no CORRECT way to do genealogy. What
works for you is what is correct.

So I will agree that I did not read the bulletins. Usually the bulletins
on a bulletin board service are all the same and pretty worthless. They
may be different in your case. Also, I thought you had synopsized your
service in your note to the net, so rather then spend megabucks reading
instructions at 1200 baud I thought I'd just dive in. Mea culpa. Perhaps
someone for whom the ROOTS-BBS is a local call would like to give a thorough
review of the system. Or perhaps the operator would like to post to the net
a more complete overview of the system so that netters can save some money
when they are trying to get instructed.

I have been doing genealogical research for ten years now, and have been very
successful at it. I do good work. (And I don't charge.) I'm sorry I put
you on the defensive. But I still don't have any evidence that would convince
me that the ROOTS-BBS is cost effective for the long distance caller. And
I'm not going to spend any more money finding out unless someone else
convinces me first.

steiner@topaz.RUTGERS.EDU (Dave Steiner) (01/14/86)

I found the message about the list of programs available on ROOTS-BBS
very interesting but I can't seem to send a message back; so I'll have
to ask the net. Can someone send me info on how to use the ROOTS-BBS,
esp the number to call? Also, does anyone know if these programs,
etc. are on either available on Usenet or Arpanet? That would be much
easier for me.

thanks,
ds

The correct number for ROOTS-BBS is 584-0697 -not- the 586---- one.
Please make the correction if you find it listed elsewhere. And thanks
to the kind soul who stayed on the line long enough to tell me where
she got the 586 number.
