I just read on the AP news wire that the 2nd Great International Paper Airplane Contest has been announced. The contest is being sponsored by Scientific American Magazine, the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC, and the Museum of Flight in Seattle, WA. 18 years ago, the first contest drew 11,851 entries from 28 countries. Organizers expect 20,000 entries this time. Rules differ from the first contest in that entrants may glue layers of paper together. Winners of the first three places in each division will receive the Bernoulli Medallion for paper aircraft design, and first place winners will be flown to the awards ceremony in Seattle. Categories are: Professional: aeronautical engineers, and teachers and graduate students in that field. Nonprofessional: other adults. Junior: under 14. Events in each category: Time aloft Distance Aeronautics and Design (1 or 2 events?) Each aircraft may be entered in only one event. Entries must be marked with the name of the event, the name and address of the designer, and any special instructions for holding and launching. The deadline for entry is May 1. Marginal Way South Seattle, WA 98108 Judges: Michael Collins, former astronaut Dennis Flanagan, editor emeritus of Scientific American Ilan Kroo, NASA Yasuaki Ninomiya, toy airplane designer Sheila Widnall, aeronautics engineer at MIT
