This summer, the Media Technology Lab at MIT has been developing a file system for write-once laser disks, (compact disks and video disks primarily). The file system gives the user the appearance of a modifiable hiearchy in which files, directories and links may be freely created, moved, renamed and deleted. All information entered into the filesystem is retrieveable, even after "deletion." The file system is both site and opperating system independent. It's written in C -- very carefully written C with transportation between VAXen and Micro computers in mind. I estimate that it would take about a week to port it to VMS or MSDOS. The file system has been developed on a simulator. We are currently using it to prepare tapes for mastering read-only CDs, as we have not recieved a DRAW (Direct Read After Write) device yet. When they are available, they should cost approx. $500. The disks should cost $5 each and storing 1030MB/side. I would be happy to distribute the specs to interested parties. I'd rather not send out the sources until they are running perfectly. Anybody interested should send mail to: Simson L.
