[net.announce] suspension of E-COM gateway due to closing of E-COM system.

dan@netword.UUCP (Dan Guetzkow at Netword, Inc.) (09/22/85)

With the closing of the USPS E-COM system at 12:01am September 3,
1985, we have removed the "ecom" login here at netword. Mail that
is directed for E-COM delivery that has not been acknowledged was
not submitted to the E-COM system, nor otherwise mailed.

Hard copy mail service may be offered soon, but not using the
E-COM system. Netword will need some time to prepare an
alternative product. Any mail left in queues may be processed at
that time, should a gateway to hard-copy service be re-established.

Thank you to all those who co-operated in the experiment. We
processed over 3500 letters between Oct. 24, 1983 and Sept. 3,
1985, from over 500 different users at over 100 sites.
Thanks to those of you who submitted programs to help others access it.
Our special thanks to all those who brought paying jobs in as a
result of the promotion, helping us justify the effort.

One of our heroes, without whose help this project would have not
succeeded is Gary Murakami of ihnp4, who is responsible for the
timely transfer of enormous quantities of data.

Feel free to write to {ihnp4, seismo}!netword!dan comments and
suggestions.

Look for more news in the weeks to come.

Best,
Dan
