[net.announce] Calls For Papers now marked

mark@cbosgd.UUCP (Mark Horton) (02/26/86)

I've been getting a fair number of Calls for Papers/Participation
in net.announce recently. This is fine, the readers have indicated
that this is an appropriate use of this newsgroup. But there may
be some of you out there who aren't interested in such messages,
and are tempted to unsubscribe to net.announce because you see the
newsgroup mostly made up of such messages.

For these people, I'm announcing a new service. Effective with the
next message, calls for papers will have a Keywords line included
in the header, mentioning the keyword "cfp". I'll also develop a
set of other keywords to include, as needed. (Suggestions welcome.)
For now, "long" means the message is longer than 100 lines. (Normally
I reject messages over 100 lines in net.announce, and instead ask the
poster to put the full message elsewhere, with a pointer article in
net.announce. But sometimes this would do more harm than good, and in
those cases, I'll just post it and mark it "long".) A third keyword
is "moderator", meaning "this message is from the moderator." You'll
find that keyword in this message.

Some news interfaces have the option to skip (or include) messages with
certain keywords mentioned. (In particular, I believe "rn" can do this,
although I think it searches the whole header.) See the manual for your
news interface to see if it has such a feature, and if so, how to use it.

By the way, I expect to rename net.announce to be mod.announce sometime
in the near future. If your machine is getting net.announce but you
aren't getting any of the mod.all groups, something is wrong, and you
should probably start checking around locally to see about getting it fixed.
