<<>> From the *VILLAGE VOICE* 15 January 1985: Blood Money In a burst of Christmas racism, the New York Times Magazine Group (not to be confused with the *Times* mag itself) gave staffers at *Golf Digest* and *Tennis Magazine* a South African Krugerrand for their year-end bonus. Even worse, when a flurry of objections arose, the Times companies initially refused to give the bonuses in any other form, saying only that if people wished to return their Krugerrands, a donation would be made to charity. One shudders to think what charity this sensitive crew might select. ....... ---- end of item --- Personally I think that the Times' companies were correct in refusing to give the bonuses in another form. A gift is a gift; either accept or reject it, but don't take it back to the store. PS -- I do abhor the racism that the South African minority government espouses, but if these people are truly against what the South African government does, then they should be prepared to give up their bonuses... -- ------------------------------------------------------------------- Henry C.
