Only two people have sent me the correct solution, although I'm
sure there are a few more out there who know the answer. I was wondering
if this was a popular puzzle!! Hope you enjoyed it.
The correct solution is P - N8 and the pawn promotes to a black
piece, specifically a black knight. Check Mate.
The promotion rule has since been clarified to read from:
"a pawn may promote to any piece, except another pawn or another
king"
To:
"a pawn may promote to any piece of its own color, except another
pawn or another king".
Think of the possibilities if this rule had not been changed!!!
What would happen if for some strange reason I promoted a pawn to one
of my opponents rooks, on its proper square and his king has never
moved. Can he castle - after all, the rook has never moved - or has it???
