in BYTE Oct. 1980 in an article:-

           Machine Proble Solving, Part 2:
           Directed Search Using Cryptarithmetic.

     SEND
    +MORE
    -----
    MONEY

    was the example chosen.

The same problem shows up in Doug Cooper's _Oh! Pascal_ (note: _not_
an endorsement...).  Haven't done it, though...
