Wrong, wrong, wrong! You never said the glass was a perfect cylinder, and your solution won't work for a quite typical glass which is wider at the rim than at the base (picture the extreme case where the glass is a cone with the pointy end as its base). I didn't send in an answer because I didn't see one, given the information you presented (so if no one else raised this objection, I'll take my 3 points, please :-) ).
