[net.puzzle] when does rot13 NOT produce garbage ?

osman@sprite.DEC (Eric Osman, dtn 283-7484) (02/25/85)

I was curious to know what English words, when rot13'ed, would produce
other English words. I asked my computer, using a fairly extensive
on-line dictionary. I was rather disappointed at how few examples there
are. I was hoping there might be enough so someone could concoct something
that "made sense" both rot13'ed and not rot13'ed !

Here are the pairs of words that are for the most part both English,
and are the rot13 versions of each other:

abjurer nowhere ah nu aha nun an na
ant nag arg net art neg avg nit
balk onyx bar one be or cher pure
crag pent envy rail flap sync fur she
gnat tang green terra her ure hern urea
irk vex

"abjurer nowhere" is the longest example. "irk vex" is my favorite.

That word "irk" coincidentally enough cropped up in my favorite
anagram too, namely "irksome smokier".

p.s.	Are there other news files to which this entry would
	be worth posting ?

gnat tang *Also palindromic!

Another well-known 7-letter rot is primero-sulphur. Of course,
that's a rot3, not a rot13.
