[net.lang.mod2] CP/M Modula-2 Compilers

treid@MITRE.ARPA (Thomas Reid) (03/06/86)

I am answering John Antypas' request to Modula-2 compilers to the net since
I suspect that I won't be able to get directly to him.

There are three CP/M Modula-2 compilers that I know of:

(1) The Hochstrasser Computing AG (Leonhardshalde 21, CH-8001 Zuerich,
Switzerland), a Z-80 native code compiler. It is the one that I use and it is
excellent. I ordered mine through Workman & Associates (see #2). I do
not know whether Workman still supports it and keep intending to write
Zuerich to see if they will pick up support for later releases.

(2) Jerry Pourelle's Feb. Byte Chaos Manor column mentions an Australian
$49.95 compiler by a Dave Moore with a Turbo Pascal-like integrated editor.
Somewhere else I seem to remember that for another ~$50.00, you can get
the editor's source in Modula-2. I know nothing about this compiler.
For info, try Workman & Associates, 112 Marion Ave., Pasadena, CA 91160,
(818)796-4401.

(3) Borland has long been rumored to be coming out with a Turbo Modula-2.
I have not seen an ad for it yet.

The Swiss compiler is a class act but the integrated editor like Turbo,
particularily if the editor is syntax-directed or at least will produce
templates, really saves time and energy (I'm basically lazy). The
program development environments for languages are getting impressive.

Hope this helps. Tom Reid.
