[net.rec.wood] Wood needed

bdot@hogpd.UUCP (J.BARRETT) (10/24/83)

Does anyone know of anyplace in NJ (Monmouth County) that I can buy the
wooden "slabs" that many people make into tabletops, wall clocks, etc?
I've tried several lumberyards to no avail. Any leads??

One of the other important features of Fine Woodworking magazine that
was not mentioned in the lead article on the subject is the list of
sources of wood and other supplies throughout the country. They update
it pretty regularly, too. But you should ask for the last issue with
the complete list (it isn't in every issue).

They also are very nice about trying to answer readers' questions. They
will publish the Q&A if they feel it is generally interesting but even
if they don't they will try to get a pro to answer it. I asked about
how to make a marimba. They sent the question to a guy in Brussels who
sent me an answer (He is the author of several books on making musical
instruments). Didn't help, but it sure was a nice try!

P.S. You are probably going to have to send (mail-order) for the
specialty wood you want for clocks, tables, etc. Unless by some very
strange coincidence there is one in N.J. The following is one of
several from the latest issue of Fine WW:

Ojai Woodcrafters, Box 872, Ojai, CA, 93023.

THey ask for a self-addressed stamped envelope and they will send a
price list.
