[net.rec.wood] Getting a smooth, durable/washable finish

hlh@linus.UUCP (Henry L. Hall) (12/27/83)

I'm looking for a way to get the above finish for a desk top.
I've been thinking of getting some formica (does anyone know
where to get sheets of it in the Greater Boston area?) Another
idea was to get those self-adhesive tiles. Any better suggestions?

				Thanks in advance,

Most good lumber yards carry or can order Formica for you. In this area
you can go to Mass. Hardware, Waltham, Diehl's Lumber, Wellesley, and
there is a place in Waltham that just sells Formica (I can't remember
the name but use the yellow pages.)

Self adhesive vinyl tiles won't make a very nice desk top. They are
made to compress under the feet and will do under the pressure of a pen
and leave tracks.

If you want to do some work, you can stain it and then polyurethane it.
You will have to sand and polish it, but it does make a very durable
finish.
