[net.rec.wood] Cheap Planer

I want submit an unsolicited product endorsement.

The product in question is the Wagner Safety Planer sold by Gilmore Pattern
Works. Mine arrived yesterday and it works great.

This device comes in two models one which chucks in a drill press or one
that screws onto the arbor of a radial arm saw. Mine is the drill press
version (needs 1/2" chuck or larger). It is a rotary disc with three
cutters set to limit the cut of each cutter to about 1/64" x 1/4" which
means you cannot over feed and it does not grab or chatter. I planed a 3'
rough 2x4 to a ready to sand surface in about 2 minutes.

If you have a drill press or radial saw this is a way to add a lot of
wood-working capability for under $30.00. It may not replace a planer/jointer
but for the price it can't be beat. I paid $25.50 for the drill press version
and I think the radial saw model is $28.50, and these prices include shipping
in the US. The package includes the planer, allen wrench for the cutters,
a special sharpening wheel, and a 1/4" shank arbor for the sharpening wheel
plus some literature on using the thing to make tapered legs, raised panels,
picture frame molding and some neat looking wooden rosettes. It's nice to
buy something and not have to buy a lot of extras to make it work.

Regarding the "cheap planer" article posted a few days ago --

Could the author please post the address and maybe the
phone number of Gilmore Pattern Works? Also does this
tool have any sort of safety device to protect from
injury? Thank You.

One more question to anyone who might be able to answer.
A friend of mine saw a book or pamphlet some time ago
about how to do wood carvings with a high speed rotor-tool
(ie Dremmel). He would like to get a copy of this book
or a similar one but doesn't remember where to find it.
If anyone knows of such a book we'd appreciate your help.
Thanks again.
