[net.rec.wood] Looking for a Bandsaw

dave@fluke.UUCP (Dave Van Ess) (08/21/84)

I'm am considering buying a bandsaw. I would use it mostly for normal scroll
type sawing, but I would also do some resawing. I can afford no more than $700.
Can anyone recommend a good saw?

					Thanks in advance

Bandsaws are fairly raunchy for scroll sawing. Although the books tell
you can cut a certain radius depending on the blade size, experience shows
that you can almost never get that close. If you do try to turn to sharp,
you are likely to break the blade. This is costly and can be dangerous.
Another disadvantage is the inability to make inside cuts. A table style jig
would be better.

However, the bandsaw is a handy beast. It is much better than most other
types of power saw for making quick cuts to smaller pieces of stock. Cutting
the corners off a block to be turned on a lathe is trivial (something not
easily done on table/radial arm saws) for example. You can even get one
that will also run at slow speed so you may cut metal with it as well.
