The heart is on the left side of the body. I had heard that in swordfighting, charging into battle with your right side first protects the heart better by making it a further away target. I'm not sure how a shield bears into this. I'm not entirely sure of the logistics of this, but it's clear that if swordfighting on one side protected you better than on the other, it could quickly be bred in. -- Brad Templeton, Looking Glass Software Ltd. - Waterloo, Ontario 519/884-7473

The heart is NOT on the left side of the body. It is located under the breast-
bone, in the CENTER of the body. The reason for the myth the heart is on the
left side of the body is the BEAT is loudest on the left side (the left
ventricle does most of the pumping)

If you are a bronze age warrior and someone punctures your heart. You die. Left side, right side, top or bottom, it makes no difference at all. "Don't argue with a fool. The right side of the heart is equally as important as the left. The path that the blood takes in a complete circuit goes through the heart twice - once through the right half, and once through the left half. Either half is just as vital as the other. It would be a VERY rare person to survive a sword wound to the heart ANYWAY, no matter which half was hit, especially with medicine in the advanced state it was in during the Bronze Age. There are also several other areas in the body where a sword wound would be fatal, so why single out the heart? "There's a madness to my method." Mike Moroney ..decwrl!rhea!jon!moroney

It is probably easier to hit my heart on the side, by sticking your sword through my ribs than trying to bore a hole in my sternum and hit it straight on. -Ron

I have extreme doubts as to the evolutionary effects of sword fighting, the majority of bronze age or any other age people probably never had a sword fight or even got near a sword - that's like saying we all get into gun fights Bob Palin - zehntel!varian!bob
