I took a look at the Popular Mechanics article on woodworker's
benches and have these comments:
1. The bench is much deeper than the traditional woodworker's
bench. I just completed a 24" X 48" coffee table - the 15"
depth of my Sears bench was very useful many times during the
project. Woodworkers have developed a long, narrow bench with
vises as they are with good reasons (isn't woodworking the
second oldest profession?) and I would caution anyone with
general woodworking needs who tries to improve on the design
or builds a maverick like the PM bench.
2. The reason I didn't build my own bench was a lack of sources
for the hardware - vises, dogs, etc. - needed. The PM article
gave the following source for such:
Garrett Wade
161 Ave. of the Americas
New York, NY 10013
I would appreciate comments on this place.kevin@amdcad.UUCP (Kevin OwWing) (11/15/84)

Another place to try is Woodcraft Supply in Woburn, Mass. I have not dealt with either place, but I do know that Garrett Wade has been around for a long time (at least since 1976--Tage Frid mentions them as a supplier of such items in his 1976 Work Bench article in Fine Woodworking).
