[net.rec.wood] Sharpening chisels and gouges

mike@amdcad.UUCP (Mike Parker) (12/07/84)

I just got a new set of chisels. They're the new ones from FREUD
and really are not bad for a set of 6 at $35. In the past I treated
my chisels badly and they treated my projects the same way. I'd
like to keep these in better shape.

My problem is the vast array of stones and powders and gadgets
available for sharpening chisels. So.... I'm taking a survey
How do *you* sharpen *your* chisels. I'm not really interested
in the new ( I think ) motorized wet stones as they are quite
expensive, and I won't put my chisels in a regular bench grinder
because I've ruined too many that way already. So please suggest
hand sharpening methods.

My wife just got a couple of gouges and plans to do a bit of carving.
I am sure that these must be very sharp do work well, and again I am
in the dark about the best sharpening method.

Your help is appreciated

P.S. I find far too little activity and intend to stimulate it
with as many questions as are necessary. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
