[net.rec.wood] In search of barn board

curran@euclid.DEC (Karen Vogel Curran) (01/15/85)

Does anyone know where, (preferably in northern Mass or southern NH)
I can find rough cut barnboard ?? I'm looking for about 10 sq
yds. I would like rough cut with a gray color to it.
Also I would like to know where I can find old looking nails.
Thanks for any help.

Obviously barn boards can be gotten from an old barn but if that's
not easy to find any sawmill can provide you with rough cut lumber
and at a cheaper price than finished lumber. I have used this route
to build things a little less expensively and with a bit more beef
to it (a rough cut 2X4 is just that 2inches by 4 inches!). Anyway
get what you need and then just let it sit out in the sun and
weather and in a few months you will have beautiful gray boards
for your project!

I know there are places that sell old nails but off hand nothing
comes to mind. Maybe someone else will have an answer.

Regarding aging your own barn board:

I understand that a mixture of baking soda and water,
sprayed on the rough green surface, will accelerate
the aging process to a couple of weeks. I don't have
first hand experience with this, but it sounds cheap
enough to try it and see. I would presume you
should be careful about uniform coverage.

The other alternative is to move to the Pacific
Northwest and experience our climate during the
wet season. You might lose interest in weathered
wood :-).
