[net.rec.wood] Christmas gift project

caprio@ttidcb.UUCP (Don Caprio) (08/29/85)

Heres a nifty little idea for Christmas gifts. Its a octagon shapped
pencil/pen holder. I built a couple of them in a just couple hours.
Once you have your equipment set up they go pretty fast.
The pencil holder is very inexspensive to build. You can build them out
of scrap (I did). Each one \takes less than 1/4 board foot
(oak at $3.20 = .80 cents.)

First set your table saw blade angle to 22-1/2" degress and cut strips
1-1/4" to 1-1/2" inches wide. Now reset your rip fence to the desired width
(I found and inch to be just right. see fig A) and rip the strips with
oppisite angles.

Next, if you have a planner, set it at 22-1/2 degress and make one pass
to clean up the angles.

Now set the table saw blade to 90 degress and cut the strips in lengths
of 4" inches.

Glue eight strips together making an octagon. Clamp and let dry. I used
a couple of 3" hose clamps they worked great!

Take a 1/4 inch round over and round both the top inside and out.

Cut a octagon base with a 1/4 inch reveal.

Sand the base and holder, glue the base to the holder, finish with stain,
oil, wax, etc. You can also put felt on the bottom of the holder.

I hope some of you enjoy this fun little project. Sorry for the crude
diagrams and illustrations, but not all of us have CAD systems to do our
designs on. Have fun.
