For my money I would have to say the first big machine you should buy is a table saw. This advice differs from some the the fine craftsmans advice but lets face it when you are first starting out you are going to do alot of projects that really can't be considered "fine woodworking". I'd say I probably spend more time making kite sticks for the girl scouts, bird house for the grammer school, and cutting plywood for friends than I do cutting dovetails or resawing lumber. A tablesaw is a good general wookhorse that I would not be without. It is true that a person can get good results cutting wood with a bandsaw and the jointing the edge with a plane, but this isn't something that is easy for the beginner. I do also own a bandsaw. I like it alot but if a had to give up one of them it would have to be the bandsaw.
