and not time consuming.  Dowels and splines serve one purpose, to keep
the boards in alignment while clamping.  They offer no greater strength 
than a plain flat joint.  However, alingment is important and can be 
tricky when clamping since the boards want to slip out of alignment as
pressure is applied.  Numerous books and articles in various magazines
will offer greatly detailed information for your edification.  My 
favorite method is to use a special cutter on my shaper called a 
"glue joint".  This joint alings my boards and allows me to apply
glue very quickly without having to spread it with a brush or my finger.
