All these sites posting their information to net.adm.site would be wonderful if the recsite script wasn't broken. As it is (at least with news 2.10.1) it keeps overwriting the first entry in the file so I have only the latest entry. Also the lines do not begin with 'sitename;' and some of the article headers are included in the output file and shouldn't be. Here is my usenetdir file as of now: Relay-Version: version B 2;Subject: site:denelcor Relay-Version: version B 2;Message-ID: <243@denelcor.UUCP> Relay-Version: version B 2;Date: Fri, 9-Dec-83 23:03:45 PST Relay-Version: version B 2;Article-I.D.: denelcor.243 Relay-Version: version B 2;Posted: Fri Dec 9 23:03:45 1983 Relay-Version: version B 2;Organization: Denelcor, Aurora, CO Relay-Version: version B 2;Lines: 5 Relay-Version: version B 2; Relay-Version: version B 2;Site: Denelcor, Inc. As the original article says the recsite script is designed for an "A"-type
news header. The above example is what happens when a B type news header is
fed into this script. Anybody have time to post a script that would handle
"B" headers? I really don't want to have to recompile news with the "OLD"
option set in defs.h.
On a related issue I am not quite sure what to do with the output of the
recsite. The info is supposed to be in "pathalias" format but the version of
pathalias I have won't handle it, at least until I do some hand editing on it.
This version won't accept or ignore lines beginning with prefixes ending with
colons or semicolons. Comment lines have to begin with '#'. I don't know
if later versions of pathalias will accept prefixes of this form as I don't
know the history of pathalias. Does someone know what gives?
> In the meantime I suggest you all stop sending your site information.
The information has easily come in at a slow enough rate to digest it by
hand editing (which, as mentioned above) I would have to do anyway. Please
keep on sending your site information.

Funny. My file usenetdir is working just as advertised. I think maybe qubix is hand feeding the message to recsite, without stripping the headers; the instructions include a line to insert into /usr/lib/news/sys which will automatically feed the site data into recsite, minus headers. The one thing that isn't kosher (pardon) is that some managers have automatic signatures which get (got) appended to their submissions; Gene Spafford's is the one I saw, but there are others. These find their way right into usenetdir. Annoying, but easy to edit out. DON'T STOP THE SUBMISSIONS - THIS IS THE LATEST ATTEMPT TO GET A REALLY USEFUL NET MAP BUILT, AND IT DEPENDS ON OVERCOMING THE (shall I say it?) LAZINESS OF A LOT OF THE SITE GURUS OUT THERE. By the way, I have no idea what this message was doing in this group. I think discussions of this kind should go into news.adm. So keep those site data forms coming in, folks. -- Lyle McElhaney ...(hao,nbires,brl-bmd,csu-cs)!denelcor!lmc (303) 337-7900 x261
