Dave, You are certainly correct in that many people would not mind advertisements on the net. It is one thing for someone to say something like "there is this new widget from Able and has this feature and that feature...". However, it is probably a little different for anything more formal. People who have systems that spend money for forwarding news and mail have to justify costs to their management. It is hard enough justifying costs for the network the way it is. I do not think that I could go to my management and let them know that there is "formal" advertising on the net by our competitors. I think that we should take the same approach that Usenix does. NO Advertising. Leave it to things like UNIX-WORLD or Info-pro... aps.
