[net.music] Garcia busted

rcd@opus.UUCP (Dick Dunn) (01/21/85)

According to a tiny news item Saturday, Jerry Garcia was arrested Friday
(18 January 1985) on suspicion of freebasing cocaine while sitting in his
car in Golden Gate Park. He is now free on bail.

Several thoughts come to mind:

Nobody particularly expects the guys in the band to be completely
straight [and who knows how the news story relates to the reality
of the situation?] but freebasing coke is a pretty heavy game to be
playing--big risks (of bad-news addiction, OD, or even just flesh
	flambe').

This ain't a good way to get publicity for the band. It will also
no doubt play havoc with scheduling at least the spring tours.

Getting busted in public is prima facie evidence of carelessness...
	sounds inadequately clever, Jerry!

Off on a tangent:
One of the off-and-on stories is that JG doesn't take particularly good
care of himself. If one were to judge from what he LOOKS like on stage,
one might believe those stories--doesn't exactly look like a long-distance
runner (sic) with a health-food fetish. On the other hand, he's not
exactly young (42) and his performance is consistently hot. Comments?

He's a big boy :-), he should know the risks.

I don't think there are too many heads (current or future) that will
leave the bus because of that incident. I wonder if they will change
the words to truckin' (bourbon street --> Golden Gate Park)?

I would prefer to hear that he was freebasing then to have him
caught D.W.I. Was he the driver?

What's the difference between Jerry Garcia and Willie Dixon?

Willie doesn't need the black tee shirt.

paraphrase: Jerry Garcia looks like death (sic) warmed over
on stage, giving rise to rumors that he doesn't take 'good
care of himself', but on the other hand *he's not exactly
	young (42)*....

From the somewhat sensitive keys of someone who's not exactly
42, but will be (with luck) in five years or so, I hasten to assure
all you kids out there that Jerry's condition owes more to a degenerate
lifestyle than to the degeneracy of gerontia. There are a lot of joggin',
swimmin' stockbrokers (some of whom live right next door to Jerry) who
are maintaining just fine-- probably helps that they restrict their
freebasing to the weekends.

Anyone who had a nickname "Captain Trips" during the heyday
	   of LSD...

nm34@sdcc12.UUCP (nm34) (01/26/85)

had to have deteriorated quite a bit in that time for him to be
considered 'old and in the way'. The last few times I saw the band it
was at the end of a tour and JG's voice was a bit rough and weak, but
his guitar was as sharp as ever. Has he really gotten bad. I cant
imagine it.

Back in 68 and 69 there were stories that JG was hooked on coke and
he was on his way down. A decade and a half of contributions to the music world
shows that he wasn't a dead-head but is the true DEADHEAD.

Hmmmm...LSD ain't cocaine au solvent. It's tough to get addicted to LSD,
even harder to OD, and it isn't flammable...now if you want to talk brain
cells, that might be another matter--but it doesn't seem to have adversely
affected Garcia's creative abilities...
