Thanks for all your replies. I did reply personally to each one but most of them got bounced back to me. Until I've found out why I thought I'd better thank you here. As a new Unix'er I get masses of conflicting information so you've all been a great help. Trading execution speed for space ? Hmm .... I do want to live ! It's an interesting idea though. I don't know about UNIX systems but some systems do slow down as they're running out of space at which point Sys Admin has to do a lot of work chasing people about their files.
