[net.motss] Meeting in an alcohol-free environment

keesan@bbncca.ARPA (Morris Keesan) (10/07/83)

I was interested (but not very surprised) to learn from a friend that
there is a fairly large percentage of gays in Alcoholics Anonymous (that's a
fairly large percentage of both groups, compared to the percentages in the
general population). Not surprising, given your problem, which is an
unfortunate cultural phenomenon.
I found out this fact when I asked her about her T-shirt which said,
"The Boston Roundup". She explained that The Boston Roundup is an annual
get-together and dance of gay members of Alcoholics Anonymous. They rent
Boston City Hall for it, and people come from miles around, not just from
Boston, and not even just from New England. I suggest getting in touch with
a local chapter of AA, who will probably be able to refer you to their
SIGGAY (or whatever), who may suggest answers to your question. I don't know,
but I expect they're open to having non-alcoholics ("straights"?) participate
in their social gatherings.
