When I was a child and early teenager in the mid-to-late 60's, I often listened to radio talk shows, and they would now and then have guests on from the "Mattachine Society", the "Daughters of Bilitis", and the "Homophile Union of Boston", all quaintly named pre-liberation gay support groups. There didn't seem to be much hub-bub about it one way or the other, but, then, Boston isn't Rochester, NY, either. I can't speak about present day guests, since I don't listen much. One interesting media event which occured last week in Boston concerned the election of David Scondras as a district city councillor, the first openly gay elected Boston official. In his victory speech, which was covered by the three local TV news station, he introduced and thanked his lover for his support throughout the campaign. It was mildly amusing to see the newscasters attempt to discuss this, and gay political clout in general, while barely disguising their expressions of bewilderment and unease. /Steve Dyer decvax!bbncca!sdyer
