[net.motss] Some resp. to Will--Separate spaces

sdyer@bbncca.ARPA (Steve Dyer) (01/06/84)

Will,

WRT "lesbians and having a separate space", what is your feeling about the
blatant harassment and discrimination that some women's bars impose upon
men and even non-Lesbian-identified women who try to gain entrance?
I won't argue the point of 'net.lesbians' vs. 'net.motss', if only because
the example of 'net.women' and especially 'net.women.only' shows that
voluntary segregation just cannot be achieved! Witness the preponderance
of submissions by men in 'net.women.only'.

My own feeling is that everyone has the right to form private associations
for whatever purpose they like, but when that association takes the form
of a public shop or tavern, private preferences HAVE to go out the window
in abeyance to the public policy of equal access by all to all public
facilities. I don't understand how some people can demonstrate before
a bar which harasses minority groups, yet at the same time turn a blind eye
towards the equally reprehensible actions of some women's bars. I find
both very sad and unacceptable.

One last comment, many news items have expired since you discovered the
group (a bug in the expiration program keeps the roster a bit pock-marked
as far what gets expired), so you probably haven't seen ALL the discussions.
Also, the "kin selection" theory of homosexuality was beaten to death in
'net.singles' quite a while ago. I think we've exhausted that topic, so
post your comments with that in mind.
