[net.motss] American justice and the will of the people

crane@fortune.UUCP (John Crane) (01/07/84)

I suppose this is the most appropriate newsgroup to submit this in.
I know a lot of poeple take an interest in this, but particularly
the Gay people of San Francisco have a special concern, so here
goes:

If you have been following the news, you would know that last night
a man who murdered a mayor and a councilman in their offices, in
daylight, in cold blood, if being released on parole after serving
in proson for only 5 years.

I don't think this day should pass without registering some sort
of protest.

I don't know how anybody else feels about this, but frankly I'm
mad as hell. I don't ordinarily get upset by the news and I
usually ignore current events (basically lazy), but this issue
has me very angry.

I like to think I would feel the same way if it had been another
murderer and other victims.

There are a lot of issues to be raised here and volumes to be said,
but all I want to say is the American judicial system (what's left
of it) just went down another notch in credibility with the people
it is SUPPOSED to represent and protect.

I can't disagree with you, John, but the electronic
media have been making a much bigger play out of Dan White's
murdering Harvey Milk than of his murdering George Moscone.
Recent news coverage (Boston's WBZ-TV and Cable News Network) showed
the violence accompanying the original conviction on
manslaughter, WITHOUT a "file footage" disclaimer. This
implied that the rampage was taking place recently, not five
years ago. (The handling of this is similar to the handling
of Boston's desegregation in the early and mid-seventies.)
No one (I HOPE) condones violence against gay
people. But it is ironic that White's killing of Moscone is
handled almost in passing, particularly by the gay activists
interviewed. That saddens more than surprises me.
