[net.motss] Army Navy Marines

debenedi@yale-comix.UUCP (Robert DeBenedictis) (05/01/84)

I think this article (regarding the sexual aspects of gay life in the
military) is a bit out of place in net.motss. I would be more than
happy to be on a mailing list that discussed the issues but I worry
about it being discussed in a public forum. However, if you think
we can get away with it, go for it.

I would have no objections to discussing how the military deals with
homosexuality. That is, their policies, written and unwritten. But
discovering who does what, why, and when just might border on the seedy.
I don't know. Maybe it wouldn't be that bad. However, I think we'd
present a better face if we just stuck to discussing oppression and the
"gay sensibility/perspective" of the world.

But, do what you want. I'm never one to spoil anyone's fun or freedom.
I only posted this so that if other people felt the same the could add
their two cents. Also, I think it'd be nice to have a flaming discussion
in net.motss about just where the line gets drawn in discussing "Issues
pertaining to homosexuality."

Here's to a more active newsgroup!

Yeah, thanks to Robert for broaching the subject. I think the question
of who does what to whom in the military is better suited for "STH"
(a marvelously seedy magazine) than net.motss. This isn't any kind of
double standard; I would expect the same standards for any other newsgroup.

I agree that discussing about who did whom is a little out of place,
however, I would like to hear how it is in the military. I am of
the opinion, (that is your average uniformed American) that the
military it quite homophobic and that it has been getting worse during
this administration. Is it easy to come out and if so, what happened...
Lets keep things presentable, but lets talk about them.
