Ok lets try this again, the first time I posted it our system hiccuped and lost the message. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Well, MIT Project Athena is finally getting (and hopefully sending (i.e., is this getting out there??)) net news. In response to Robert's article (if you missed it you probably suffer from LONG lapses of conciousness): I agree, I too like to read things sent to net.motss simply BECAUSE they are sent to net.motss. Messages posted here help to lend a sense of "community" among computer scientists (software engineers what ever you prefer) who have somthing more incommon besides UNIX. MIT is also just completing the term.. Exams begin this Monday (oh boy, the first term (and last term!) without exams, I agree, it is great to finally graduate!!). I just finished my thesis (i.e., ten minutes ago) and will submit it tomorrow. Since this is the first message I have posted to the net I guess I should insert a note as to "from whence it came". I am an undergraduate (soon to be graduate) of MIT and the chairman of GAMIT's (Gay's at MIT) counseling committee. My work with GAMIT is principally to help Gay and Straight students alike to deal with being Gay at MIT. We (the counseling committee) are currently involved in a project called GAP (Gay Awareness Project) which is designed to help students in MIT fraternities deal specifically with the difficulties of gay students living in fraternities. GAP has been a tarrific success (if I may be so bold as to boast). We have run several "test" projects, meeting individually with two MIT fraternities (Theta Xi and Delta Upsilon). The "rap sessions" we arranged recieved nothing but compliments and creative criticism from the brothers. I really should add that the results are somewhat skewed by the fact that we deliberatly did not chose any "ultra-conservative" or "ultra-liberal" houses. All in all GAMIT is quite pleased with the results. More on that in future messages. I work here at MIT on Project Athena, a 5 year joint project between MIT, DEC and IBM (we also have contributions of people and equipment from BBN and CODEX but I am not sure if they are as yet considered "major contributers"). Project Athena is, and I quote so as not to get blasted for impropter PR: "... a major [MIT] wide experiment to integrate modern computer and communications capabilities into all phases of the education process. Athena's principal goal is to help our students learn more creatively and fully in a wide range of disciplines...." ----------------------------------------------------------------- That is all I managed to save of the original posting *sigh*. Any way you get the idea. To reiterate Robert's message "Keep those postings comming"! Tony...

I would like to point out one thing, briefly: not everyone who reads and enjoys this group is homo- or bi-sexual. There are many other reasons to be interested in gay issues besides being gay yourself. Since gays (I believe) represent a significant minority, they can have a significant effect on society as a whole. There are even personal reasons why a non-gay could be interested in gay issues, such as having a friend or relative who is gay.
