[net.motss] earrings

In recent articles, Richard Brower says, ". . . one of my instructors had
called my boss in San Francisco to complain about my earring. And I even wear
it in the left ear!" and Robert Wahl says,
 1) I've been thinking of having my "queer" ear pierced as a socio-political
statement. It is the least offensive sign I know of to state one is (probably)
gay which is widely known to straight society. The question: should gay men
be encouraged to wear earrings as a means of increasing gay visibility, or
would this simply reinforce the stereotype that gay men are effeminate?

My question: which ear is which? Depending on whom the statement of one's
gayness is intended for, I'm not sure it matters which ear you get pierced. I
suspect the vast majority of straight society doesn't recognize which is the
"queer" ear. I personally don't know. I've heard, among other things, that
the signals are different depending on where in the U.S. or world one lives,
and in particular that the conventions are opposite on the east and west coasts
of the U.S. Can anyone enlighten me?
