If you are interested in gay/lesbian issues and insights, you should pick up
a copy of "Flaunting It!: A decade of gay journalism from The Body Politic".
It is published by the Pink Triangle Press (Box 639, Station A, Toronto, ON,
Canada M5W 1G2), and presents excerpts from the magazine covering the
years 1971-81. I found this to be an extremely thought-provoking, uplifting
and entertaining collection. The pieces are arranged into the following
sections:
Risks
Living our lives
The making of the image of the modern homosexual
Advice on consent and other unfinished business
Advice on consent
Working together
Cruising and censorship
In the courts, on the hustings, in the streets
The Seventies
Into the Eighties
As further enticement, I quote remarks from the jacket (referring to TBP):
"a dirty, crummy publication without a redeeming feature"
Toronto Sun editorial, 1978
"a serious journal of news and opinion"
Provincial Court Judge Sidney Harris, 1979
"a filthy piece of garbage"
Toronto city alderman Joe Piccininni, 1982
"plays a useful role in helping to clarify issues"
Toronto mayor John Sewell, 1979
"aggressive recruitment propaganda... proselytizing for homosexuality"
Toronto Star editorial, 1974
"an open window into the gay community"
Arnold Bruner, author of police/gay relations study, 1981
"kids are coming in off the street and buying this"
Metro Toronto Police Morality Squad officer, 1975
It seems that whenever we assert our identity we are accused of trying to draw
attention to ourselves. If that is how people perceive it, so be it. For me,
the title (in garish green emblazoned across a tasteful pink cover) says it
all. Read and enjoy!
