[net.motss] Alcoholism, Christianity, and Effective Treatment

suhre@trwrba.UUCP (Maurice E. Suhre) (12/22/84)

I have noticed postings to this groups suggesting that the
homosexuals should (paraphrasing) give up their lifestyle,
repent their sins, and beg for forgiveness. I am not too
disturbed by such rantings since I am confident that the
gay community will not fall for such baloney. Unfortunately,
I have also noticed an attempt to tar the alcoholics with the
same brush. This is what bothers me.

If you wanted to learn to hit a golf ball, the thing to do
is to find someone who had demonstrated their ability to
hit a golf ball and have them teach/help you to do it.
Similarly, if you want to learn how to not drink and
to live comfortably in the world, you should look up the
people who have demonstrated their ability to not drink
and to live comfortably. Those people can be contacted
through the fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous (number
is in the white pages).

One of the standards demanded by the FDA is efficacy of
treatment, particularly for drugs trying to be approved
for the marketplace. Something like 2,000,000 (that's
two million) have recovered through AA. How many have
recovered through bible thumping?

It appears to me that the bible thumpers are using a textbook
that is about 2000 years old. Yes, it has withstood the
test of time. But, these methods didn't work in the 30's
and I don't think they are any more likely to work in
the 80's.

Perhaps this should have gone to net.flame. And I may
post it there.

Maurice
