[net.motss] BRUCE, the "gay" name

rjd@linus.UUCP (Robert DeBenedictis) (03/27/85)

I've noticed that the name "Bruce" has gay overtones.
Has anyone else noticed this?

When did this start? Is it just because Bruce Jenner
appearred in a Village People movie?

In my own mind it seems as though "Bruce" just sort of
has a gay ring to it. The name feels like "brute" or
"moose" gone sideways. Any help on this matter will be
used to justify searching /etc/passwd for all Bruce's.

Truthfully, Robert, discussing Bruce (and whether it is a gay name or
not), seems like a pretty stupid topic. But, since you're my friend,
I'll respond.

Sure, I have heard the names "Bruce" and "Brucie" used as derogatory
names in reference to gay people. I have known only one gay person
named Bruce, and he never acted in any way different from the many other
gay people I know. There's also a Rick Springfield song called "They
Call Me Bruce", but that's in reference to people confusing him with
Bruce Springsteen, who DEFINITLY does not act gay in any way.

Oh, Yeah! Give old Bruce's lyrics a look-see sometime. One particular song
that comes to mind is "Backstreets" off the Born To Run album. I don't have
them with me, but they talk of an almost sensual relationship between Bruce
and someone ambiguously named "Terry." Also, is a gay Bruce Springsteen SO
unlikely? How old is the guy? He's not married that I know of. Also, he
frequently sings of alienation and other themes which I find I can relate
to (as a gay person, that is). [Admittedly, that last sentence is something
to contend with, but I'm off now to an AT&T 1/2 price lunch.]

I read (I forget where) that Bruce Sprungspring was observed "french-kissing"
his bass player on stage at several different concerts. Was this hogwash ?
Hmmm....
