In purusing the record rack at gay bookstores I have noticed not a mere imbalance of female versus male song artists, but a near dearth of ANY male artists. Apart from Bronski Beat, and the occasional special-order albums such as Gay Men's Chorus albums, who is out there singing songs for men to hear? The only artist I've ever heard of in my admittedly limited experience is Paul Parker, but I never heard him. I have grown tired of hearing het singers sing about there het lovers. All fine and dandy, but it is a strain to have to changing the genders and prevents my getting into the feeling of the song. I don't wish to limit the range of suggestions you netters can offer, but if I had to pick a style or first-buy it'd be something romantic, blues, or folk, with rock/pop second. So: who are the Holly Near's of the gay male world? Where do you write to order their albums? \bob usenet: decwrl!dec-rhea!dec-vaxwrk!peterson /\ arpa: peterson%vaxwrk.DEC@decwrl.ARPA arpa: @decwrl.ARPA:peterson@vaxwrk.DEC

[] You're right -- there isn't nearly as much music by and for men as there is by and for women. There's some, though, even if it isn't easy to find. Rose Records in Chicago has a men's music bin next to their women's music bin. Most of it is of the "contemporary folk songster" genre. The only artist I can think of off the top of my head is Charley Murphy, who I once heard in concert at the Appleblossom Cafe in Ithaca, NY. He might be a place to start. You might also try the catalogs for companies that specialize in distributing independant labels, like Alcazar Music in Vermont. -- Melinda Shore ..!ihnp4!gargoyle!sphinx!shor University of Chicago Computation Center Staff.Melinda%chip@UChicago.Bitnet

{} If you like folk style music, then I would highly recommend Charley Murphy. He has at least one album out: "Catch the Fire". If he has any others, I'd be interested in finding out about them.
