Here is the information on upcoming gay rodeo in Phoenix. If anyone has
sight-seeing suggestions for Phoenix, please post or reply by e-mail.
First annual Arizona Gay Rodeo, January 17-19, 1986
Schedule of events:
Friday, Jan 17 12 noon Luncheon & judging for grand marshall
6 pm Cocktail party and contestant registration
(Registration closes at 12:01 AM)
7 pm Welcome and dance exhibitions
Saturday, Jan 18 12 noon Rodeo grand entry
1 pm Rodeo competition
7 pm - Barn dance featuring Dena Kaye
10 pm
Sunday, Jan 19 12 noon Rodeo grand entry
1 pm Rodeo competition
Winners will be announced immediately
following the rodeo
As for going out after the early-ending Saturday evening barn dance,
Charlie's, a gay c&w bar, (yes, the same owners as the c&w bar of the
same name in Denver) is probably the place to go. I have heard
that they MAY not have yet gotten their cabaret license, so they may
or may not have (c&w) dancing. At 3425 N 7th Ave, which is very close to
the host hotel (Camelback Sahara). Phone: 263-0808.
The leaflet did not give the location of the rodeo grounds nor whether the
Saturday evening barn dance takes place at the host hotel, (the Camelback
Sahara) (my guess) or at the rodeo grounds. You will be able to find out at
the Friday evening festivities.
Rodeo events:
$15 per person/team per team per day
All events are both on Saturday and Sunday
Registration can be done at the Friday evening festivities, or in
advance. Contestant entry forms can be requested from the AGRA at
the address and phone number given below.
Bareback riding
Barrel racing
Break-away calf roping
Bull riding
Calf roping on foot
Chute dogging (aka steer wrestling on foot)
Goat "dressing" (2 person team)
Pole bending
Steer "decorating" (2 person team)
Texas flag race
Team roping (2 person team)
Wild cow milking (3 person team - must be one man, one woman,
and one person in drag)
Wild cow riding

(If this is like the other IGRA-sanctioned rodeos, everything is free
