As many of you have no doubt noticed, many of the fa.all newsgroups do not have any traffic. The mailing lists on the ARPANET do exist, it's just that the gateway into Usenet on ucbvax is broken. Without anyone responsible for Usenet on ucbvax, and given the high load of that machine, I think it makes more sense to move the gateway function to some other machine. I would appreciate a volunteer for this. Such a site should be on both Usenet and the ARPANET (if possible) and have a responsive contact person. It would be possible to either use recnews to post read-only fa.all style newsgroups, as Berkeley once did, or else to set up an SRI style two-way gateway ala net.micro. This function can occur on any Usenet machine able to receive ARPANET mail, and the direct ARPANET preference is just for efficiency. It makes no difference whether the machine passes news over the ARPANET or not. Mark Horton
