[net.news.adm] looking for forceful expire program/script

joe@petsd.UUCP (Joe Orost) (03/09/85)

Looking through my /usr/spool/news/*, I find may articles with dates going
back to november of last year. Why does this happen?

Does anybody have a program/script that I can run which will delete these
old files (prior to a date I specify)? It doesn't matter how slow it is, as
I just want to run it once in a long while (like 6-months).

					regards,
					joe

A while back (few months?) someone posted a shell script called
histmiss which found all of the articles not in the history file (and
so those which would never be expired). There is no name in the
comments so I do not know who posted it, but I've mailed it to you and
can mail a copy to whomever wants (though I'll repost it if this gets
out of hand).

find /usr/spool/news -mtime +14 -exec rm -f {} ';'

That will clear up your disk space, which I assume is what you
are concerned about. It might leave the news system thinking
some articles exist which don't, but that doesn't matter much.

In 2.10.2, at least, "expire -r" will not only find those articles, but
will put them back in the history file where they belong. It takes a while,
because it reads the header of every article, but it's worth doing every
so often (things leak out of the history file now and then).

Some people have posted news that they do not want expired. Emily Post
for Usenet is such an article. You may want to check which articles
you are going to remove before you remove them incase they are not
being expired for a very good reason.
