I'm looking for some way to do semi-automatic routing to usenet sites.
I've seen other systems where one could say "mail user@host" and some
package would replace this with an appropriate path. This sounds very
nice, since as it stands I don't even know how to reach a given site
(at my previous site, someone sent me a file listing all paths from
me to everyone else, I was at least able to grep that)... I compiled
at program called 'pathalias' that someone gave me, but I take it
that more is needed.. Can someone give me the final word on what is
needed to implement such a system? Great appreciation and a ticket
to "Martha's house of wonders" in Rockville, ND. would be forthcoming.
(BTW, I'm running 4.2, so if you have compatable source...)

Every day, in every way, I'm getting better and better.tracy@hcrvx1.UUCP (Tracy Tims) (03/15/85)
I was wondering if there is any automatic path routing software available,
as well. I have hacked up some myself (but they are only a first approximation
to a solution). I have a set of subroutines will can take a UUCP or Internet
style address and try to do a sane path optimization using pathalias. There is
a routine for doing a site lookup in a pathalias or mkpath database (uses a
binary search on ordered text files so it's quite fast and it doesn't need a
special version of the pathalias or mkpath database) and a hack to Berkeley
Mail to have it use these routines. I also have a command called "fixpath"
that reads stdin and writes to stdout optimizing anything that could be a
path. It's useful in news when 'r'eplying to messages: just set vi's
cursor to the beginning of the "To: " line and type "!!fixpath". Voila.
Anyone want this stuff?
