[ I have heavily used readnews, rnews-mode in GNU Emacs, and notes ] notes offer several benifits in the way it organizes it's database. It uses far fewer files/newsgroup. This reduces resource use on a machine alot: - fewer file open and closes - less disc space loss to partially empty last blocks - less directory searching (particularly each newsgroups directory fits in a single disc block) This is attractive to both system administrators and users. As a user, my preference is notes. The increased responsiveness (from the data organization on disc), and the indexes with chained collections of news postings, both combine to let me read the News quicker and more productively. My major regret is that I have to handle posting to multiple newsgroups myself, but I find this a small cost to pay for the added reading speed. As a member of the USENET community, I look forward to the continued improvement of the notes software. Particularly fixes to the problems that so irritate those users who use readnews style interfaces. -- Len Tower Project GNU of the Free Software Foundation UUCP: {}!mit-eddie!mit-prep!tower INTERNET: tower@prep.ai.mit.edu ORGANIZATION: Project GNU, Free Software Foundation, 1000 Mass.
