[net.cog-eng] Screen colors vs lighting preferences

ntt@dciem.UUCP (Mark Brader) (08/23/83)

I thought I just posted this item once, but it seems to have vanished.

Some people (whom I hereby name "Type L") like a lot of light.
They have many lights in rooms, bright ones, and never a dark corner.
Most offices and classrooms seem to be designed by Type L's.

Other people ("Type D") like the minimum amount of light they can read by.
They prefer one lamp in a room, by the reading chair. They seem to design
restaurants (except low-priced ones), motels (except HIGH-priced ones),
and many waiting rooms.

Each type complains of eyestrain and headaches when in the other's territory.
I presume there are also intermediates who don't care so much about lighting.

My question is, is preferring white or black screen backgrounds correlated
with being Type L or D? I am a Type L, and I definitely prefer a white
background -- but I have my (conscious) reasons, and they are not related
to my L-ness. (One is that the letters are made of solid lines, not dots.)

Would other Type L or D people, or people who know Type L or D people,
like to comment on this?
