There is plenty of work showing that left and right justification makes things more difficult to read. There are books like Spencer, H (1969) The Visible Word. London: Lund Humphries and Hartley, J (1978) Designing Instructional Text. Kogan Page: London and also a book by an author called Zachrisson. Here in Reading we have a Typography Department where such research goes on. For more recent stuff try mailing reading!uts.am.reading!ltsdyson who is Dr Mary Dyson, Department of Typography, University of Reading, Reading, Berkshire RG6 2AL. They also did work on Prestel screens and the like.
