I am looking for references ( or some discussion! ) that point to issues related to the design of intelligent window/display managers as well as menus and menu-based windowing systems. Though any related articles would be interesting, I would be particularily interested in surveys of alternative design choices, such as pop-up menus vs pull-down menus, or independant, shell-like windows that do not share histories, files, or shell variables vs. interdependant windows that are just different viewpoints on one environment. I am also very interested in developing an understanding of the space of events or activities within a window/menu based environment. For example, events related to a window and mouse that might be important to design around are when the mouse-pointer moves into a window, when it moves within a window, when it moves out of a window, when each button is pressed within a window, etc. Other issues such as building knowledge or intelligence into system interactions would also be interesting. I will post any references I receive.
