Is anyone in netland aware of any research or published standards for using windows on video display terminals. For example, what is a reasonable upper limit for the number of simultaneous windows (5 + or minus 2? 7 + or - 2?). Should all windows be titled? I would appreciate hearing from anyone doing work in the area. Thanks cbdkc1!mww or cbuxc!mww

Rather than building human limits into our computers, how about enhancing human limits with our computers? Unlimited windows would augment my short term memory with visual reminders on my screen. I think the real question is not what limits we should impose, but rather how to design interfaces that make it as easy as possible for us to transcend our human limits. That is, don't limit windows, but give us the most convenient possible interface with an unbounded number of windows (mouse? touch panel screen? bit pad? what?). The real (the important) research would be to find out how to maximally human engineer an unlimited window interface.
