Here are some questions about cognitive science. The name of the respondant will be kept confidential and a summary of replies will be posted to net.cog-eng. The responses will also be made availible ( by me ) to the participants of the Conference on Teaching Cognitive Science at Amherst in August. DO NOT POST REPLIES!!! Are you a student/professor/worker? At what institution? 2. Do you think there should be undergraduate programs in cognitive science? 3. Do you think that the study of cognitive science should be restricted to graduate students? 4. Do you feel that students should major in a home department ( say philosophy or psychology ) and study cognitive science on the side, or do you feel that students should study cognitive science primarily and specialize in a home department ? 5. Do you think of Cognitive Science as a single field ( perhaps as an aggregate of other fields ) or as a set of very separate but related fields? 6. Do you have any complaints about the cognitive science program there ( or the lack of one )? 7. Are there enough cognitive science courses? 8. What are the core courses that you've taken? ( The emphasis changes from school to school. For example, at ucsd the emphasis is cognitive psychology, whereas at berkley it is linguistics. Others use philosophy, computer sci, etc. ) 9. Do you find it hard to get a job that pertains directly to your interests? 10. If you have a job, what is your title? 11. Would you prefer to have a job titled "Cognitive Scientist" where you could practise "Cognitive Science" or a job titled according to your departmental area of emphasis? 12. Do you find that employers ( not universities ) know what Cognitive Science is? 13. Do you find that other students know what "Cognitive Science " is? 14.
