[net.cog-eng] Some good books for workers in CHI

perlman@wanginst.UUCP (Gary Perlman) (08/14/86)

Here are my favorite references/teaching sources on user interfaces.
These books have been well received by my students are readable,
useful, usable, and in some cases, all of the above.

If you have any suggestions about good books for teaching statistics
and how to write documentation, I would appreciate them.

Campbell, S. K. (1974) Flaws and Fallacies in Statistical
Thinking. Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice-Hall. A popular,
lively, and critical introduction to statistical reasoning.

Shneiderman, B. (1986) Designing the User Interface. Reading,
MA: Addison-Wesley. The best overview of user interface
     design yet.

Smith, S. L., & Mosier, J. N. (1984) Design Guidelines for
User-System Interface Software. Bedford, MA: Mitre
Corporation. (Report #MTR-9420.) A monumental work that is
a required reference for any user interface designer. A new
version is due out in November 1986.

Solso, R. L., & Johnson, H. H. (1984) An Introduction to
Experimental Design in Psychology: A Case Approach. (3rd
Edition). New York: Harper & Row. A great introduction for
     psychology experiment design.

Tufte, E. R. (1983) The Visual Display of Quantitative
Information. Cheshire, CT: Graphics Press. A great book on
     making graphs.
