[net.women.only] doctors

I think most of us can see a clear advantage to having a woman as a
gynecologist or general practitioner. I have always tried to make
sure my doctor was a woman.
I also agree with the poster who suggested that we support other women
by choosing dentists, lawyers, etc. who are women. I do this. For one
thing, I hope to be able to counter the effect of people like my father
who deliberately AVOID women in these capacities. For another, if I want the
world to be more accepting of women in traditionally male professions (and I
am one of them so I am VERY interested in the changing role of women) I feel
I should lend my moral and financial support to these women.
My doctor and chiropractor are both women. There was only one (identifiably)
female dentist in my yellow pages and she was a children's dentist, so my
dentist is a man. His chief qualification is that his office is 1/2 a block
from my apartment.
There are those who say we should pick the "best qualified"
professional, regardless of sex. Well, we can't all go to the same one!! And
there are usually plenty of well-qualified women out there to choose from.
