Did you ever hear that song by the Cars called "My Best Friend's
Girl"? The chorus has the line "She's my best friend's girl, and she
used to be mine".
I know of at least one real-life example. My younger sister
was dating Mike, who started to take her for granted. She
got to know a good friend of his, Greg, and as she spent a lot of time
with "hanging out" with Mike's friends, she got to know
Greg pretty well. She gradually got tired of
Mike's attitude and started dating Greg. She wound up
staying with him for about 6 years. I'm not sure how much it
affected the friendship between the two men involved, but I'm
fairly sure they weren't best friends anymore.
She and Greg considered "My Best Friend's Girl" to be "their
song".
